Health authorities in India have been warning women to stay away from products that are made with the same chemical used to make nail polish and that are supposed to treat the common form of nail growth.
Health authorities said the chemicals used in these nail care products, which include talc and boron nitrate, were used in some Indian nail care product manufacturers.
The chemicals, which are also used in cosmetics, were found to be carcinogenic, the government-run National Institute of Health and Family Welfare said in a statement on Thursday.
They were also linked to the development of the cancer of the scalp, according to the statement.
The health ministry also said that people with skin cancer could suffer from the chemicals, especially if they used nail care.
The Indian government is conducting a study to assess the safety of the products.
